THE PRINTER'S DEVILS:

The Print Room's Artistic Apprenticeship Scheme

A Printer's Devil was an apprentice in a printing establishment who performed a number of tasks, such as mixing tubs of ink and fetching type. The origin of the term is unknown, however, one belief among printers was that a special devil haunted every print shop performing mischief such as inverting type, misspelling words or removing entire lines of completed type. Former Devils include William Blake, Samuel Richardson and Walt Whitman.

In our converted Print House, the Printer's Devils are four young practitioners working as associate artists of The Print Room. They have been invited to develop individual projects in the space, as well as to collaborate on group works. They are tasked with creating mischief in the worlds of theatre, dance and music.

We have completed our first year of apprenticeships and will be announcing our 2012 apprenticeships soon.

The Printer's Devils for 2010 - 2011 were:

Dan Ayling, Hubert Essakow, Jeff James, Petra Jean Phillipson

The Devils first collaboration was City of Lost Angels, a theatrical launch of Petra Jean Phillipson's new album, Notes on Death, in December 2010.

After a year of artistic apprenticeship at The Print Room, we presented a showcase of their work at The Devils Festival in June 2011.
