How It Is (Part One)

by Samuel Beckett

Following the Beckett In London festival at the Coronet in 2016, Gare
St Lazare Ireland return to the theatre with How It Is (Part One) – one
of the most important and powerful prose works in Beckett’s canon.

A man lies in the mud, in the dark. He repeats his life as he hears it,
uttered by another voice, telling how it was. Meanwhile, memories
surface, perhaps, of life above in the light.

Judy Hegarty Lovett and Conor Lovett – artistic director duo of Gare St
Lazare Ireland – are widely recognised as the pre-eminent interpreters
of Beckett’s prose. This major staging of How It Is (Part One) sees them
joined by Olivier and BAFTA Award winner Stephen Dillane and
Tony-nominated composer and sound designer Mel Mercier.

Praise for Judy Hegarty Lovett and Conor Lovett:

“…having seen nearly all of their profoundly moving interpretations of Beckett, all attempts at restrained objectivity go out the window.”
