Octandre Ensemble presents

Way Out East: Composer Portraits

Tickets: £15

Journey Eastward through a series of Sunday evening concerts in ‘Composer Portraits’. The Octandre Ensemble present three composers who will introduce their work in pre-concert interviews on Sunday nights throughout the Spring. Listen to some extraordinary talent – and join the musicians for a drink in the bar afterwards.

4 March 5pm

Nicola LeFanu

‘LeFanu is renowned for works of imaginative beauty’ BBC Music Magazine

The Same Day Dawns, featuring soprano Sarah Dacey, sets vivid fragments from Oriental poems to music, while Deva casts a solo cello as goddess, charting a metaphorical journey through sensuous instrumental music. The acclaimed Ligeti Quartet will also play LeFanu’s 2nd String Quartet with music by LeFanu’s mother, Elizabeth Maconchy.

Running time 120 minutes

13 May 5pm

Rolf Hind

Equally renowned as concert pianist and composer, Hind draws inspiration from Indian culture and language. In Way out East a set of three chamber pieces, featuring mezzo Lore Lixenberg, is juxtaposed with The Horse Sacrifice, inspired by an ancient Hindu ritual.

Running time 120 minutes

17 June 5pm

Frank Denyer

Denyer’s ‘extensive study of non-Western music… shows in the semi-theatrical, almost ritualistic atmosphere his music creates’ The Strad

In Screens performers are concealed behind extraordinary dressing screens with soprano Juliet Fraser at the helm while After the Rain, inspired by the breath-taking regeneration after an extended Kenyan drought, provides another work of unique beauty.
